I am looking to replace our 1991 20valve wagon. It has served as very well but time for something newer.
Never thought of an a4 as i though they were pretty ordinary and slow. I found an s line manual and i have to admit, it looks great. With an APR chip one might bet above 230hp and decent torque.
Are these cars suitable for mountain driving? they are quite heavy and even with 230hp i think they might struggle, any experiences?
Also how are they space wise for an infant seat in the back? The other car I am considering is a v70r with manual.
thanks

I have a 2006 A4 2.0T Avant Manual Quattro.
The power in the mountains unchipped is fantastic. There is more than enough power to haul a$$ up to the Eisenhower tunnel in the left lane passing people at will. I honestly think you'll be presently suprised by how much power this car has. Chipped would be even more.
The space in the back seat is somewhat of a problem for my family. With a rear facing infant seat positioned in the back, the front seat needs to be very far forward. With our infant seat in the right rear, even my wife (5'2") complains that she's too close to the dash.
I'm not sure how it would work with the infant seat in the center as that was never an option for us.
I'd recommend test driving the vehicle with the child seat installed and see if it works for you. They are great cars!

I have a b7 2.0t, sport suspenion, 6mt, no s-line however. It has plenty of power to get up the mountains. 110mph+ up Georgetown Hill is not an issue--I'd say that's fast enough. The best part is the combo of power and gas mileage. When I need to drive to the front range, I average a combined 32mpg for the way down+way up at usually 85-90mph both ways.
My mom has a v70r. Power is great, but not tons better than the audi...granted hers is a auto. Gas mileage comes in at a horrible 23ish on the highway. Handling is great for such a big car too.
If you test an a4 2.0t, I don't think you'll find it underpowered. I would say it's just right for a stock car. It also get peppier after about 5,000-7,000 miles.
ps - on a side note, my stock a4 will kick my friend's 330xi's (e92) *** in the mountains.
