Default Poll: Who thinks this is b.s. (Longish) - Edit

So my car goes in Thursday for a couple of warranty repairs. Minor things. While I'm on the phone I ask the service advisor, are cam seals done under CPO, answer, yes. Me: Woohoo!

To the point, I figure if they're taking apart everything to get to the seals, it's timing belt time in about 3 months, which should be around the time those seals are ready. I ask, ok, how much considering you're already billing AoA for the time. 900 bucks for the timing belt service. Anyone else think this is robbery, and I should slap the service advisor?

Final Conclusion: 950 for the timing belt is reasonable and will be done by the dealer at 60K. Thanks everyone for chiming in.

Where is the car at? I know prestige usually charges about $1200+ for a t-belt job.

$900 seems like a lot still, but there is a lot of labor involved, I mean ripping apart the whole front end of your car. I guess it depends how they planned to dot he cam seals compared to what they need to do for the t-belt.

FWIW, I think Prestige charges aroun $85-$90/hour for labor, I'm not certain. So if you figure parts from the dealer for t-belt are probably like $400 - $500 the about $700 is labor then it's not that bad of a deal.

However, I don't know what the parts are going for these days nor what the actual labor amount is. I am just guesstimating here.

So yeah, $900 might be right for a dealer charge, but if you could get it down to $700 I would be much happier.

Which is not unbelievable, keep in mind my last service there was a couple years ago which is why I was unsure what it might be now. I also know Osborn VW recently (last fall) upped their labor rates to $90/hour so I think that Colfax stretch is a little costly now.

Default And one more thing

Based on Eric's comment then $900 sound even more reasonable than before.

Default now now...

I certainly wasn't expecting a free service, I just thought that 900 was a little steep if the front of the car was already off.

Default I believe the normal charge for T-Belt and 60K is $1400

So there is some savings. This is why I love this forum, for a sanity check. I will certainly try and negotiate when it's time for the service.h

Default Camshaft seals or cam adjuster seals?

If it's the adjuster seals, the front end does not come apart.

$900 seems pretty reasonable for complete TB job & related parts. If you DIY, the parts alone are about $550.
