Q's about buying car outside CO
#11
plates (temp) are fine...but you are going to, in all liklihood,
pay some form of tax here in addition to regular plates, and you will have to provide proof (a sales form, etc.) to the DMV to get CO plates. Don't pay tax twice...in fact, dont pay it at all where you buy the car! other than that...the issued temp tags will be fine. I did the same thing (bought it in ohio, then drove it out here).

just have a bill of sale with you in the car
IF you get pulled over, that should cover it. That's what the colorado DMV told me about driving the car I bought in Mass.

I just did this 6 months ago...
You need a to get a temp CO tag to "legally" drive it back (unless the person you buy it from can give you the plates on the car).
To get temp tags you need a few things...if i remember correctly:
1) Bill of Sale (or in your case, an intent bill of sale. Just have the other guys write a mock one up since you're not going to buy it sight un seen)
2) Proof of insurance, talk to your insurane agent to get it on the plan and in writing...
3) Copy of the title front and back
4) VIN verification: this was the hardest thing to get. The owner needs to get a highway patrol or dealership or DMV (?) to verify that the VIN on teh car is correct and true. This needs to be on notery and signed by an official from any of the above to be legit. Call the County office to get full story on this crap.
THose were the steps as i remember them. You need to have all of the above to get a temp tag in CO. It's definately a PITA, but you get 90 days of TEMP time to get the car registered, which is nice. BTW, after all this stupid paperwork, it cost like 16 bucks to get the temp
Good luck with the purchase sir!
