A victim of Sunday's shootings outside a Denver nightclub that wounded five people described moments of chaos as the club was emptying.

"Shots just rang out," said the 28-year-old victim, who is recuperating at his mother's house in Texas and still has a bullet lodged in his leg. "I just took off running. I was hearing (the bullets) whiz by me. Then I felt a burning sensation."

The Denver Post is not identifying the man because police have not made an arrest in the shootings at about 1:45 a.m. outside of Club Vinyl in the 1100 block of Broadway.

One victim remains hospitalized in critical condition. Four other people were treated and released with minor wounds Sunday.

Police on Monday said no suspects have been identified.

"We're still pleading for anyone who has any information regardless of how insignificant they think it is to come forward," said police spokeswoman Sharon AvendaƱo.

The club had featured a concert by California rapper E-40.

Witnesses say shooting began as people left the club after the concert.

The victim said he saw no fight or altercation before the gunshots, which he said appeared to come from both ends of the street.

"I was just trying to get out of there," said the man, who was visiting Colorado over the Christmas holiday.

Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said investigators believe the shooting was an isolated incident and that he does not expect a violent New Year's Eve downtown.

hey fight all the time outside the club," McCracken said. "I knew one day there would be gunshots."

the club and said when he first heard the gunshots he thought it was the sound of a skateboard rolling down the sidewalk.

When he heard a second round of blasts, he knew it was gunfire.

He said he later saw at least four people with gunshot wounds on various street corners.

"There was a guy down here who was bleeding like crazy," said Davis, pointing to the blood-caked sidewalk at the corner of 11th Avenue and Broadway. "They need to do something about that club with innocent people being shot."

A bullet lodged in the wall of one of the hotel residences rented by Lorenzo Tenorio, who said a bullet whizzed right over the bed where he was sleeping.

"First I heard two, then three shots, and then one right after another. ... I lost count," Tenorio said. "It was like I was back in Vietnam."

Daniel Kellner followed emergency vehicles from Speer Boulevard to the scene and said he saw one person who had been shot in the leg and another who had been shot in the neck.

"There were shot-out windows, there was blood about every 100 yards," he said. "I don't know if people were hit at close range and ran, but it was a pretty wild scene."

A manager of a bar near the club, who asked not to be identified out of fear of retaliation, said he often sees police cars outside Vinyl.

"Obviously I don't want shootings around my bar," he said.

Vinyl is owned by Regas Christou -- whose family maintains six clubs in the vicinity. Christou did not return calls Saturday.

Denver Police Chief Gerry Whitman in the past has singled out Christou's clubs as among the few where he will not allow police officers to provide off-duty security.

"He lost the right to hire any police," Whitman has said. "It's not a right. It's probably a matter of the violence in his clubs."

Two years ago on New Year's Eve, an altercation outside of the Shelter -- across the street from Vinyl and also owned by Christou -- led to the drive-by shooting that killed Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams.

In 2006, Christou's brother, Christakes Christou, was arrested after shooting a burglar at the nearby Funky Buddah after the club had closed. According to online court records, prosecutors later dismissed the attempted-murder charge and Christou received a deferred sentence on a charge of tampering with evidence.

In 1996, off-duty police officers shot and killed Jeff Truax outside of the Christou-owned club that is now Vinyl.

City records show 14 criminal incidents occurred at Vinyl's address from January to November, including four cases of aggravated assault that involved weapons. Three of those cases occurred around closing time, according to the report.

Police Chief Gerry Whitman forbids officers from working off-duty at clubs owned by the Christou family.

The ban stems from a 1996 incident in which two off-duty officers shot and killed Jeffery Truax outside the club that is now Vinyl. The controversial shooting resulted in a federal jury ruling that the city should pay the Truax family $500,000, saying officers violated Truax's constitutional rights. Regas Christou criticized police actions after the Truax shooting.

Chris Christou, who manages The Church nightclub, said off-duty officers would add a level of security. But he says his family's clubs have worked without officers' services for 12 years and have a well-trained security staff at both The Church and Club Vinyl.

Regas Christou owns six famous nightspots in Denver - including The Church, Funky Buddah, The Shelter and Club Vinyl - and his name is somewhat iconic now in that realm.

But a reputation that has taken four decades to cultivate has been scuffed in the past two years after a series of incidents, including a shooting outside Club Vinyl that injured five people early Saturday morning.

Christou was not made available for an interview Monday, but in a 2001 interview with the Rocky Mountain News he said starting restaurants and clubs was his passion.

"To me this business is about creating things," he said. "I don't give a s--- about the money."

When he arrived in Denver in the '70s, he was simply a guy trying to make ends meet working as a busboy, bartender and even restaurant manager.

Eventually, he and his sister opened up the Regas Mediterranean Cafe with $12,000. Christou's club creations were soon to follow, although not all of them were successful.

But the money came anyway. And so did some waves of unwanted publicity, including scrapes with the law that culminated in June when the 56-year-old spit on a parking enforcement officer who was giving him a ticket for a meter violation outside The Shelter.

Denver Police Chief Gerry Whitman does not allow off-duty officers to serve as security at the clubs because of violence.

Christou has shown himself to dislike authority - not only with the spitting incident but with his words, as well.

In the 2001 interview with the Rocky, he said, "I resent authority. That's my biggest problem. To me, a badge doesn't automatically make me give you respect."

He also has battled state liquor and building officials for everything from not selling enough food under a hotel and restaurant license to balance liquor sales to modifying clubs without approval.

The Shelter was in the spotlight almost two years ago when Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed in a limousine after leaving the club.

E-40, entrepreneur

E-40, also known as Earl Stevens, is similar to Regas Christou in one regard - he's an entrepreneur.

E-40 left a successful record label, Jive Records, and formed his own - Sik-wid-it Records. He has more than a dozen albums and has had his songs performed on Entourage and CSI: NY.

The rapper, originally from Vallejo, Calif., is 41 and on his MySpace page, boasts he's a "rap innovator, a business-savvy tycoon and one of the music industries most consistent success stories."

His raps are varied - a track called Earl urges youths not just to dream of being athletes or entertainers but to become lawyers as well.

However, he also raps about being a drug dealer and a pimp and has a track, Pole, as an homage to strippers.

Default ah, Vinyl. Heard about the shooting there.

I'm staying away from downtown tonight! I've done LoDo New Year's Eve before and have no desire to do it again. ;-)

*edit* just realized Vinyl is not in LoDo and is near where i'll be tonight. haha.
