2003 RS6 vs. 2003 M5 vs. 2003 E55
I'm stuck at work right now watching my money drip away in this market dreaming about my next car. It might take a bit, but i see no problem with dreaming.
I'm nearly 100% on board with the RS6, but wanted to talk to those who have owned any BMWs or MBs that they liked better.
talking bang for the buck here! bull market cars.

RS6 outruns both easily and is 4 wheel drive, So if you are near snow its no question.
I have only test driven but turned easily back to Audi as they do not really compare. The other two seem more dated to me today (than our A6s) and are worth less certainly today but also cost less back in the day...but go drive one of each and i think you will quickly see why the RS6 was king of the hill in '03, with 50-75 more horses and certainly more torque the RS6 is a real beast. And with RS6s now breaching the $20K's its really an easy decision to me. A modded 03 M5 i could see having better handling but otherwise is not an all around all weather performer.

i shopped all of these aggressively
it kind of comes down to what "character" you want out of your car... some would disagree with these stereotypes, but here is where i came out
MB AMG - fun torque, huge luxury, but feels very removed, lots of them on the road, and not so usable in any bad weather
BMW M5- again, not unique, lots on the road, looks a little date, good but not stellar performance, love it/hate styling
RS6 - sporty soul, very rare, stable AWD, teutonic sytling inside and out, strong performance stock, crazy performance with chip, relatively reliable drivetrain (this assumes that DRC is not a really expensive fix and that torque converter problems while reported on this board, are probably in the minority for stock cars)

Don't forget 2003 or 2004 Benz S600/CL600 with RennTech chipset
625HP, 738 lb.ft of torque. It will smoke any car on the road from a rolling start.
No AWD, interior is not as artistic as the Audi, and it's a big car. More like a turbine-powered limo than a sports sedan.
But OHMYGOD does it pull from 80 to 140 like no other car you've ever been in. I am talking off the charts power that never lets up. In fact, when I had mine, I would lift off the gas at 120+, and the car had so much momentum it would continue to accelerate for a few seconds before leveling off. Crazy stuff.
And for depreciation, you can't beat them.
The CL600 was $139K list in 2003/2004, and RennTech adds $5k or so to that. You can buy one now in nice shape with under 50K miles for under $40K. Bam!

Still accelerating after lifting - not possible
Not doubting the impressiveness of the vehicle but it is physically impossible (at least without a flux capacitor) for any vehicle to continue to accelerate after lifting the throttle. Fnet=ma. If there's no F from power then the only F is from drag in the other direction. Therefore Fnet is negative and your vehicle is slowing down.
I'd still dig a ride in the car, though.

I hear you, but the feeling is there..the front end does not drop down for a few seconds, I swear.
Besides, part of the RennTech upgrade is an increased capacity higher-performance flux capacitor.

Re: 2003 RS6 vs. 2003 M5 vs. 2003 E55
I would have bought the 2003 RS6 but got scared off by the reliability issues I kept hearing about. I also seriously considered the E55 but found the back seat to be much smaller than expected (not much bigger than the BMW 3 series I used to have) - I need something that fits kid car seats. Both though had incredible acceleration. I also far-preferred the E55's interior -- warmer/less dated than the Audi. I couldn't find an M5 that fit the bill, so I ended up with, and am happy (more or less) with the 2006 A6 4.2 S-line.
