As a current A6 4.2 owner with the plan to upgrade to a lower mile RS6 this summer. I got the call yesterday that I'm apparently first in line at the local dealer for an '08 M3 to be built in March and delivered in April. (don't really remember putting my name down) I said yes but now have 2 months to really decide....help.................

Here is the decision i would put it between on 08' RS4 and the 08' M3. The RS4 and M3 are almost identical performance wise. The RS4 has a nicer interior, 4wd, cheaper, wide body, styling imo. Both have 420hp, rev to 8300, 6 speeds, and awesome exhaust notes. Honestly between the RS6 and new M3 im going to have to pick the M3.

$3k+ per year maintenance vs. $0 per year maintenance
Old car vs new
The RS6 is good for carrying more than two people.
For all intents and purposes the M3 will be nearly as fast as the RS6 in a straight line and way faster on a track, if you're into that.
My RS is a carpet cleaning away from going on the market (if I get it unstuck from being high-sided in the snow), so that I can either keep my current e46 M3 or place an order for the e92 M3.
As much as I like the RS6 (its GRRRRREAT!), I'm an M3 kinda guy.

With the B8 chassis on sale shortly, in addition to the new S5 and coming RS5, the RS4 is going to be in the 'old technology' group, also when compared to the slightly newer M3 (chassis and development timeline respective, the M3 is newer).
The B6/B7 platform is long in the tooth. And the new M3 will look long in the tooth against the B8 RS4/RS5 cars shortly though...
Personally, if awd and 4 doors aren't necessary, the M3 would be my choice for 'fun factor' (tail out hooligan fun, whenever the mood strikes).
new vs new, the M3 wins on price and resale too.

Gobs and gobs of torque, mediorcre chassis, "LOOK AT ME!!!" styling.
There is a Top Gear segment comparing the new M3, RS4 and C63 available on Youtube. Sorry for not having the link.

The fit and finish... plus style of the Audi is vastly superior. Given that the new M3 is a V8 I could actualy compare them (my V6 M3 is a bummer compared to the grumble and torque of my RS)...
I think the M3 would be good. I'd still prefer the boost of the RS though, and the price difference is significant.
I also concur on the electronics/dating of the RS...

I am considering buying an RS6. I don't have the $ to get a new RS4 or M3. I prefer the larger size of the Rs6 anyway. Any other cars I should consider? (I prefer Audis, AWD, German, Subtle so I have my mind 99% made up).

I have had my '02 A6 4.2 for several trouble free years...the V8's got alot of pull, the maintaince has been minimal as it was a CPO car, but it really hasn't needed much compared to an RS6 (from what I have read here) I know its not an RS6 but an '04 4.2 (wider RS6 body) can be had for 30k or less.
Also an '02 0r '03 M5 can be had for under 40k.
