How to do WOT in 2nd?
#4
I ran some without kickdown
I ran some 2nd gear runs in Tiptronic mode without kick down effect.
You have to make sure you are moving though, above a certain speed, while the tranny is in 2nd gear.
Also, while running, don't take the foot off the accelerator and then go WOT. See if you can maintain the engine running with your foot on the pedal at a low RPM.
You can try running the car in 2nd gear as mentioned above, and then set cruise control.
I think that if you let off the gas entirely, and then go WOT, it might have the tendency to kick down.
I usually try to do 3rd gear runs instead.

It sure feels like it
I have the same "problem" trying to avoid the kickdown; however, when I get it just right it feels like WOT. I have MUCH more success in Tip mode than in either D or S.
In my experiece, the RS6 has a very touchy throttle and getting what I want out of it requires a steady right foot. We need to be SUPER smooth on the gas or run the risk of being, err, un-smooth. I had the most issues with this kickdown running autocrosses when sometimes you want to put it into 2nd and "set it and forget it" like the Ron Popeil rotisserie barbeque machine. However, whenever I came out of a slow section of the course and was too eager on the throttle... voila, kickdown. There are also times that I wished it would bounce of a rev limiter instead of shifting into 3rd.
I think, as with everything in life, it just takes lots of practice and getting a good "feel" of where the point is just before kickdown. I went to an Evolution Autocross School this past spring and whenever the instructors drove my car on the course they NEVER hit the kickdown point--and they were hauling A$$ to boot. And NONE of them had ever driven an RS6 before, either.
The lesson is: smooth = fast. And smoothness makes up for a lot of problems.

i could disconnect the kickdown button :)
with this much torque from low revs, it feels like an anachronism anyway.. most of the kickdowns from 2 to 1 or 3 to 2 are kinda useless IMO as a lot of time is wasted spinning up the engine and then there is only a couple of K of revs left anyway. My bet is in-gear speeds without kickdown are not a whole lot worst overall, and certainly less dramatic. If I want a kickdown I use the paddles.
Plus if you invoke a kickdown accidently then close the throttle half way because you already had enough thrust, it all feels and sounds wrong and sometimes "thumps" as well.
