Loud groaning from steering first thing in mornings when cold, is this common?

It's been pretty cold out here lately and I figure it is normal ( I hope!) for the groaning sounds that have been coming from steering the car fisrt thing in the morning on 0-20 degree days.
The first time I turn the wheel a full turn I also hear a slosh sound as well. What is this? It sounds bad, but again, all noises are only on very cold days.
Any insight appreciated on this matter.
Thanks!

Mine did that right after our first cold snap. Got better but not gone, felt a bit sheepish at the mechanic as soon as he went to open the cap. Also found a loose hose clamp that was seeping that was the likely cause of the fluid loss.

If the fluid level gets low enough to cavitate the pump, you will get some air in the lines too. Then Daveykids fix will also be required.
