Default Are all VW504 oils 5W-30?

By accident, I got Euro owners manuals in German when I picked up my RS4 in Ingolstadt. I know enough German to read that they recommend VW 504 00 - spec oil. There is no mention of viscosity required...only VW 504 00. No mention of special RS4 oil, or of VW 504 in 5W-40.

The only ones I see, online and in European stores are in 5W-30. Are they really specing 5W-30? Does it actually say 5W-40 in the US manuals?

I've read about other oils being better, but I want to stick with proven VW-specs to avoid warranty problems, and because I know the specs and the related tests are there for a reason..even if I'm in the minority. Let's just say I know a bit about oils and testing even though I'm not an internet celebrity.

Default US manual recommends 5W-40, VW 502.00 spec

My dealer uses Castrol Syntec 5W-40, which is what I use for topping off as well. Mobil 1 5W-40 is the only other oil I can find at local retail outlets that meets the 502.00 spec.

You'll get all kinds of conflicting recommendations here. RI RS4 recommends some kind of whale *** oil or something.

I have a really hard time finding 5W-40. I use Castrol Syntec 0W-40 for topoffs. It meets specs.

Default interesting....I've never even seen Castrol 0W-40.

Autozone by my house has both Castrol Syntec and Mobil 1 in 5W-40.

Default The M1 5w40 in the states is not the same as the one offered in europe.

In the US, M1 5w40 T&TD = Delvac 1 which is not 502.00 approved.

Default there is a non-T&TD Mobil 1 5W-40 that is labelled 502.00 approved.

my local Autozone has it. it may be leftover old stock, but it's there.

Default Got a pic?

There has never been a PDS of a 5w40 M1, other than Delvac 1 / T&TD / T&SUV, that I've seen.
