Anyone else annoyed by the ridiculous gas consumption when the engine is cold (40L/100km - 5mpg)?

I have a short (2-3 miles?) commute and I'm still filling the tank up once a week. Anyone have any tips or tricks? Maybe warming up the car for 5-10 minutes?

That just wastes gas by prolonging the time that the engine is being fed the extra-rich fuel mixture. Plus it adds to fuel dilution of the oil. Just get in and DRIVE!
I'm not really that smart to figure it out, this was the recommendation of BMW for M cars. My daily commmute is 10 miles each way and I typically get about 17-18 mpg.

Try not to let it annoy you because even when the gas mileage improves as the miles build over time, it still consumes gas heavily until it is at operating temperature.
