Fortunately, that's something I haven't experienced...

My car did it a few times today and I heard a thump on one occasion.......
I think I am dropping the clutch before I let off the gas by a few tenths of a second. That seems to cause the noise and if the gas is dropped before the clutch then no noise.

yes, you don't really need to press the clutch fast, but at least give
very very very little gas that will solve the problem. This only happens when you completely off the gas before you press the clutch on a engine braking situation.
