Default Anyone heard of paint 'wet sanding',

used by Lexus on their LS, and whether any Audi equivalent?

Default I don't believe Audi wet sands anything before it leaves the factory...

wet sanding removes orange peel and makes a perfectly smooth finish.

Skilled detailers can wet sand to get rid of orange peel or to remove etching or really bad scratches.

Default In between coats they might

but that's somewhat a thing of the past. New technology allows for very precise painting.

Default Lexus paint in general is kind of crappy - and Toyota even worse. Very prone to orange peel.

Something to do with the paint formulation, the charging process (positive and negative charged particles), and baking process.

It's not so obvious on light coloured cars, but on dark ones, my first glance often makes me think the car has been repainted at a cheap shop.

Low VOC paint seems to be more prone to this problem. Audis in general (as with most German produced cars - not North American) appear to go through a paint process that minimizes this problem. I am really thinking hard about how to get a finish comparable to the factory finish on the Alfa once the resto is under way. It's far harder, and has no peel at all compared to new paint. But the clear is finally starting to let go if you look very closely, and the hood is checking where heat buildup is greatest. The new stuff is better for the earth and all that, but I'll need to do some more homework before going the path of modern cars.

Default Nissan is one of the worst I've seen for orange peel, along with Toyota...

BMW is bad too, surprisingly. Audi and VW are virtually without any orange peel. Superb paint finishes. And my Subaru is like Audi and VW with no orange peel. Just another reason to despise Toyota and Nissan...Honda seems a little better on their paint.

Default However, the past couple of years have yielded an especially nice paint palette from Toyota.

In brochures it is nothing special, but on the cars the paint colours make the cars look better than they should.

But they need to knock off periwinkle. There was a Highlander shadowing me today, falling back, then zooming ahead maybe a dozen times today when I was out driving the CS. They weren't even gawkers, just middle aged folks with really bad speed control. Seems like most periwinkle drivers are like that.

Some more exclusive cars are. Vipers for example.

Default I remember reading in a car mag that Lexus does hand-sand in between coats on LS...

Could be old information, though. I do distinctly remember reading it.

Makes sense, considering you would expect the whole package to improve in a car like that, paint inclusive.

Default

So many people use the gas as an off on switch rather than rheostat.
