Is Certified Pre-Owned Worth the Price?
Hey guys,
I currently have a 2004 Audi S4 and I'm thinking about trading in to get a 2008 RS4. I have seen many RS4's on ebay for high 40's and low 50's with roughly 20,000 miles on them and found one at the dealership for 57 and 20,000 miles (certified pre-owned).
In your opinion is it worth it to get the certified car (100,000 miles or 6 years) for 7k more or to go out and find out from a private seller for around 50? Also, all the servicing is covered and prepaid (25k, 35k, and 45k miles). I appreciate the input. I drove the car today and it was definitely a nicer ride than the S4.

considering it only costs the dealer $2k to CPO the car I dont think so. Its nice to have that piece of mind but after owning an audi for 3 years Im not sure it really matters. I bought a CPO'd 06 S4 in 2007 and havent had one problem with it. In fact I havent even had a warranty issue yet. Ive put about 40K miles on it in that time too.

Thanks for the insight. That's what I thought. I'm going to try and talk them down in price because 57 IMO is way too high. I've been doing a lot of research and it seems that they are very reliable cars and shouldn't be an issue as a daily driver.

Private will always be cheaper and you can pay for a good dealer to check it over. You have the Audi warranty running on a 2008 for a long while yet.
IMO having often sold privately, if you pay attention you can get a good deal, most people are very honest, especially with such a car. Looks like you appreciated the difference from an S4 pretty quickly.
btw, $57k for 20k miles is BS, and the Audi care servicing was only $700 or less/free with negotiation.

That's what I thought. It does seem pricey. I'm going to either have to do some negotiating or just buy privately. That may be the best option here. I appreciate the input guys. Thanks.

That car should retail for less than that with the dirty carfax. I'd check the paint carefully as well. You might be better off buying one privately then carefully selecting an extended warranty. You could come out a few grand ahead and you could spend that on important things like exhaust.

I also don't think it's worth that kind of markup! BUT, it really depends on how long you intend to keep your cars. I rarely keep my cars for more than 3-5 years; hence, CPO warranty is not a priority for me. Looking back at my car history, I have sold my previous two bmws the same year the original warranty ran out. But again, if you intend to keep the car longer, CPO may be worth looking into. It may also be a little easier selling a car privately down the road that has a CPO warranty...IF the original warranty had run out.
