I'm posting this because there is not much difference between the 3.2L V6 FSI engine and ours, as far as ignition and fuel delivery goes.
Something is happening in Audi Land.
------------beginning of TSB -----------
Technical Service Bulletin
MIL on - misfire DTC stored after cold start
01 07 02 Feb. 8, 2007, 2011719/3. Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 01 number 06-04 dated Mar.
15, 2006 due to updated reference to another TSB.
Model(s) Year VIN Range Vehicle-Specific Equipment
A3 2006 All 2.0L TFSI R4 Engine
A4 2005 - 2006 All 3.2L FSI V6 Engine
2.0L TFSI R4 Engine
A6 2005 - 2006 All 3.2L FSI V6
Condition
Sporadically, after cold start, the engine may run slightly rough for a few seconds and the MIL may illuminate with a DTC for misfire on one cylinder only (P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305 or P0306) stored in ECM data memory. The rough running condition disappears a few seconds after cold start and does not exist with a warm
engine.
Technical Background
Not applicable.
Production Solution
Not applicable.
Service
* Follow normal Guided Fault Finding Diagnosis.
* If diagnosis results are inconclusive, do not carry out any repair or replace any part.
* If condition persists, contact the Audi Technical Assistance Center for further assistance.
Tip: For 3.2FSI Only: Ensure Technical Service Bulletin 2010890 Cold engine runs rough or stumbles;
warm engine may stall when engaging gear and vehicle is stationary has been performed.
-------------------------------------------------
N.B. - That referenced TSB 2010890 was the ECU update that was supposed to fix misfire problems on the 3.2L FSI engine a few months back.

Did you all think owning a 4.2L V8 with 420hp, a 12.5:1 compression ratio, and an 8300rpm redline wasn't going to be a high maintenance proposition? This ain't no Accord V6.

This TSB is not even RS4 specific. It includes every car that Audi has made since 2000.

https://forums.audiworld.com/rs4b7/msgs/46689.phtml</a

sounds like an upper cylinder problem...as in design. HOWEVER, I do not believe it to be so on earlier engine types. That just isn't happening.
So, it goes back to your very perceptive idea that they are tying to deflect attention away from potental design flaws in the FSI engines, and make it a simple fuel issue, across all models back to 2000. And the motive there is painfully clear.
Does this TSB go for Europe too? Or are they letting them off the hook because of their different fuel?
Bottomline: If you design an engine to be able to operate in North America, better make sure it can do so w/o inherent problems.

Audi now making a big deal out of "top tier" fuels. Where have they been??? Talk about being behind the curve!
The only thing that would make sense is if they were talking about 3rd world markets, where fuel stds are all over the place. Fuel quality stds and enviro requirements make US fuel extremely standardized, unless you get some 'no name brand' jobber driving in from Mexico.
This is just more VAG BS, let it pass. They have taken quirky methods in the past and apparently nothing has changed.
