Yeh, been to Elfin out of Auke Bay many times on a friend's boat. I actually lived on Douglas, an island separated from Juneau by the channel and a 500 yd bridge.
I don't live there anymore, this was a few years ago.
The main road, funny you mention it. It was supposed to connect the AlCan with the rest of Alaska and Canada at Skagway and Whitehorse, I believe. They ran out of money way back when it was under construction and it hs never been completed, not likely to be either.
I worked for the state(University of Alaska-Juneau). The state and city account for about 60% of the jobs there and the only ones that pay, unless your in mining.

Anchorage really needs that place.
We were after Kings & Sockeye (1 of us caught a 50-pound+ King), Rainbow, Char, Grayling. But we also caught some Jack and lotsa Chum.
Alot of it was catch&release, but we brought home some big salmon for eating. yum.

had to fly to Fairbanks a few times for my job, but just did one long road trip to Anchorage(much earlier) via ferry from Juneau to Haines, and then driving the other 800 miles on the AlCan during winter. The Anchorage trip was actually a few years before I moved up there. Already had some friends and relatives up there.
All the lakes were frozen and got to see the big bald eagle yearly migration at Chilkat river. Drove right thru looking at about 2000 on the river bed and dozens in each tree along the road. Rare my ***! They're like vultures up there.
