'Hesitation' when driven hard -
Hello all -
First post, but been lurking a while. I purchased an '07 RS4 back in July. It's all stock with about 41k on it. I love it! I had an '04 S4 and this is so much more car it is almost impossible to describe.
I have noticed one thing though. When I'm really on it hard, usually on as I shift from 2nd to 3rd at around 7500 rpm, as 3rd is engaged there is a bit of a hesitation. It almost feels like the rev limiter but not as abrupt. It clears on its own and then continues to pull hard. I can only recall feeling it on the 2-3 shift.
My question is - can this be a symptom of the dreaded intake manifold build up? Or maybe the coil pack issues discussed on another thread? Or something different all together?
Thanks -
Greg

May be a stupid question, but do you have ESP turned off? I always have it off since its interactions under full throttle and gear shifts (like the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts) are obnoxious. A faulty coil pack will cause a CEL and there will be a miss all the time, not just at the 2-3 shift. CB issues are intermittent, but usually show up as rough cold starts and random multiple misfires (and CEL) that come and go. Apparently CB is even more sinister than once thought since its appearing in engines that never had a CEL.

I have not tried with the ESP off - I'll try that today. I thought about traction control causing this but discounted it because I never imagined it would think there was a concern with traction during straight line acceleration at the speeds where you are making the 2-3 shift.
I'll give it a try and report back. I had seen the reports of carbon build up with no CEL light - that was my major concern. Hopefully that isn't the case here -

Finally got to try it today with ESP off. Totally fixed the hesitation - not sure why the engineers would think that traction control needs to interfere where it was but that is what it is doing. I still need to dig the manual out and figure out the difference between the flashing traction control symbol and the steady one. But I know where to find that answer -

I had the same problem but only after swapping tyres to 275's.
My dealer said they were also having the same problem on a Q7 after the owner fitted 22" wheels.
Seems the change in diameter is enough to confuse the traction control.
