...dumb, not smart. Don't know why they call it a Smart car.
Nevertheless, they're cute and trendy and I'm sure chicks dig it. I wouldn't be caught dead in one, but that's me.

It was designed as a very safe city car for two people and not designed as a more conventional car.
As a city car it was designed for short commutes. You can park it in spots your Civic could only dream of.
Your info on the Smart and Civic are wrong especially in the price department.
The Honda weigh a 1000 lbs more than the Smart and it uses two motors. The Smart only uses a new gas motor. In 2007 The EPA rating for the Smart was 40 MPG city and 45 MPG highway, same as the Civic.
Here in Canada we had (not sure if it is still available) a Diesel powered version that did 62 MPG (in US gallons).
Finally the Civic Coupe Hybrid starts at $22,600 US at goes up from there. The Smart Coupe starts at $11,600 US and can climb to $13,600 US so it is really half the price of a Civic Hybrid.
And yes I would buy one to commute if it wasn't for the three children I have to drive around from place to place.

Plus I have found myself splitting lanes motorcycle style in Manhattan in it with yellow cabs on both sides. It's some funny stuff yes, butt ugle styled, indeed, but there is NO way that I could possibly think of that a civic is a better idea than a smart unless you need two more seats.
