outside temp gauge calibration?

It's not an approximation...
and proximity to the road shouldn't matter, except when sitting.
The outside temp display is taking actual temp for the conditions present where the vehicle is running.
They are very accurate unless malfunctoning or after the car has been sitting in heat for awhile. Once moving, with airflow, the temp display should normalize and read correctly.
I watch it out of curiosity normally, but I rely on it when driving through mountains and road may be icy, even though not easily apparent. When it drops near 32 it's a good warning for freezing conditions/ice.
I agree with you about people's approximation of what they think it should be, based on some estimated temp or a reading they heard elsewhere. But, that's why you have an outside temp gauge right there in the car.
