M1 0w40 is quite shear happy. Known fact . . .

Default It depends

Chevron and others have done quite a bit of work recently on some Group 3 synthetics that rival the Group 4 and Group 5 synthetics. The US Castrol Syntec is a good oil, but not quite up to the state of the art. Even with shearing, it will probably protect the engine well enough to meet Audi warranty needs. However, I'd like to see much margin as I can get with this 8250 rpm monster.

The trouble with this darn engine, and the main reason I'm doing all this test work, is that there is little published data on Alusil engines with this kind of rpm, and no comprehensive oil testing that I've seen. This is quite a different beast than iron sleeved engines.

Default The fuel dilution is the reason for the viscosity loss as well as contributing to the increased wear

metals. "Normal" fuel dilution is under .5%

Castrol 5w40 is pretty good at retaining viscosity . . . certainly not like the M1 0w40 that shears to a 30 weight under regular conditions.

IIRC, factory fill on the new models is Castrol 5w40 Magnatec . . . a synth in europe.

Default Makes sense...

and I agree with your wanting to have more info on this engine and its higher performance parameters.

Default true...but shear also for viscosity loss...

with the fuel dilution being an external variable and shear attributable to the oil composition and how it holds up under high stress.

Default Dealers are required to use VW/Audi 502.00 spec oil

There are no dino oils qualified under this spec. All are synthetic or synthetic blends.

I'm with you about bringing oil to the dealer. I like to have control over what goes into my vehicles.

I agree, Mobil 1 hardly the best out there.
