Default RS6 steering wheel questions

OK, I want to put an order in for this wheel (through Europrice) because of the MF controls, but i've been told that the airbag compatibility with the RS4 has not been tested...is this merely a disclaimer or is this really a huge risk?
It is also my understanding that the RS6 wheel uses the TT/R8 bag but do not have any confirmation of this...aren't people running TT/R8 wheels/airbags in their cars as it is without any problem?

Default The C6 RS6 uses the R8/TT airbag...

It was not made for an RS4, but that doesn't mean it won't work as it's designed. There is more of chance having issues with it then if you went with the Euro RS4 wheel and airbag.

No one here, unless they have a TT/R8 wheel would have a TT/R8 airbag. The stock US RS4 wheel uses a different airbag and so does the Euro RS4 wheel.

That being said, many people with B5's and B6's have the RS4 Euro wheel and rigged the harness to work with it. I would say those people are more at risk then what you have in mind. At least you going from 2 stage to 2 stage, the are going from 1 stage to 2 stage.

I love the new RS6 wheel as well, the only thing stopping me are the paddles..but I guess they could be removed?

Default Re: The C6 RS4 uses the R8/TT airbag...

I've heard someplace that you can program the paddles/rewire to work the cruise control, the same way you tick the stalk up and down to control the speed...but i have no details on this and do not know if it will actually work...
Will it also be that unsightly to simply remove the paddles? i'm not sure how they are attached to the back of the steering wheel since i haven't seen the wheel in person...maybe it's the same setup as the TT or other tip/DSG wheels and can just be unscrewed?

Default I just responded to your emails as well...

Just so people have this info and are considering the RS6 Flat-Bottom Steering Wheel as well. It is a really neat steering wheel, it's got the aggressive shape and design of the RS4 Flat-Bottom Steering Wheel with the MSFW controls. The TT Flat-Bottom Steering Wheel feels qimpy in comparison.

<img src="http://www.euro-audi-parts.com/rs6c6steeringwheela.jpg">

The RS6 Flat-Bottom Steering Wheel uses the TT/R8 style airbag, it is not as deep as the RS4 European airbag. The TT and R8 airbags are the only US orderable units that are correct to fit in the RS6 steering wheel. Neither is genuinely proper for this application as this combination has never been tested for safety.

So the safest bet is to fit the RS4 Flat-Bottom Steering Wheel with the RS4 European Airbag that matches. This is a tested fit and approved combo in Europe.

Now the RS6 Flat-Bottom Steering Wheel unfortunately cannot take the RS4 European Airbag, if it did this is the combination I would sell you because that airbag goes with your car. Now if you fit the RS6 steering wheel you need to pick one of these airbags, they should be the same price according to my sources though the issue is there is no inventory for these in the US. The other main issue I have is that these airbags are designed for two different chassis and motor combinations that you have in an RS4. This is untested and may be a safety issue.

As for the Tiptronic paddles. Can't order the RS6 Flat-Bottom Steering Wheel without them. So you could remove them and would likely want to make some cover plates for the holes that removing the paddles leaves.
Cheers,

Default To make the paddles do anything else you would need to run wires directly...

from the paddles to whatever else you mean to control. You couldn't do it by coding. You could make the paddles control anything at that point by running wires out of them, BUT do remember you have to deal with getting those wires passed the clockspring. Meaning there isn't extra space in the plug out of the steering wheel to get 4 extra wires out through the clockspring to send somewhere else in the car.

No coding will make Tiptronic paddles act like anything but Tiptronic paddles too.

Cheers,

Default thanks for the info Alex

I will continue to think about this wheel vs. the euro RS4...i just though some people were using the TT/R8 wheel in their RS4 as an option to the euro.
Any chance of starting a group buy on steering wheels?

Default People actually use an early US A8 Airbag in the RS4 Flat-Bottom Steering Wheel...

instead of getting the RS4 European Airbag. That is untested and its up to the buyer if they want to do that. I can give you the part number if you want to check on that airbag as well.

We've done a group purchase before, if people are interested we can surely do another. The price breaks only happen in 10x quantities and I can inquire if you are interested.

Cheers,
