If the choice were only made on a comparison of which car is more exotic, which car has more power, which car has the best engine feel, which car has the bst brakes, etc., the RS4 would win every time.
But there are other things to consider, in my case, "Which car can I convince my wife that we need!" Since we already have an A4, I think the S5 is an easier sell. Myself, I'd rather have the RS4 because I love technology and things exotic, but my wife would also be driving whatever we decide to buy. Can she handle "the beast?"
But, more to the point, nobody has answered my initial question. Does anyone think the S5 is hurting RS4 sales? The reason I asked in the first place is there are lots of RS4s for sale. You can find more than 100 on Auto Trader in any color you want, and my local dealer has three of them that have been sitting on the lot for around two months unsold.
I would not expect anyone that currently owns an RS4 to say, "Gee, I wish I had an S5 instead." But new car to new car, there's a $15K spread in price that can influence the decision too.
Thanks for all the opinions.

That said, I can't say what car you ought to get because I don't know - only you would.
As for myself, I had 100% freedom to buy the car. I had no considerations: not money nor having to share the car with anyone else.
Now what does your question about S5 sales possibly hurting RS4 sales have to do with anything?

if the car was sold outside of ebay (i.e. on a dealership used lot) there's no way of knowing what the selling price was. in that scenario, they just end the auction early, and you'd have no way of knowing the details of the sale. this is what probably happens 99% of the time.

while there is nothing yet on the B8 platform that has the performance of the RS4, a lot of people don't want a car that will look dated a year from now.
