I was parking my car in an awkward spot about a month ago.
Looking out of the passenger rearview mirror, it seemed that I had somehow got my car into the spot in such a way that backing out would scratch my rims on the curb if I were not careful. The curb was just too close and the angle was all wrong.
Long story short, I had scratched my rear right rim already getting INTO that predicament without knowing it. Whatever Austin Powers style back and forth I was doing afterwards changed nothing since the rim was already scratched.
So I had a rim rash and I was not that dismayed since it is a fact of life that nice rims get messed up from time to time.
Here is a picture of the rim rash.

A previous post from someone who had a rim rash after work one day and a subsequent response from another person mentioned that rims could be fixed, so I decided I would look into it a bit.
I looked on NCAC website for their reviews of tire specialists in the Bay Area and after some research settled on the help of a gentleman by the name of Jim Farnham.
He has 35 years of experience working on wheels and after meeting him and showing him my rim, he said to come by on the weekend and he'd have it done for me in a jiff, for $100.
That is a lot less than the next best offer, which was $170. Furthermore, he works out of his own garage at his house and he lives about 5 minutes from me, in San Bruno.
Here is what the scratched area looks like after he worked on it.

Perhaps some of you may discern the residual evidence of the rim-scraping incident, but I cannot and I am pretty happy with the job he did.
Going one step further, we noticed, with the wheels taken off, the (let's just call it the brake rotor piece) brake rotor piece was an unpolished silver color.

Jim thought that painting it black would look nicer and I agreed, so here is what the wheels look like after they were painted.

What do you guys think?
I am well aware that our brakes are more aggressive than normal brakes and they generate high temperatures in normal driving situations, but I have not noticed any discoloring yet after a week of my typical driving pattern. Driving like a grandma most of the time or bullying SUVs, 350z's, M3's, what have you.
By the way, why are Zs so fun to beat up on?
Anyway, I had a very good experience with Jim Farnham and I want to thank him and the NorCal Audi Club for their excellent references page and helping my wheel rim rash problem go away.
While I was hanging out with him on Sunday, lots of people came by to consult him for his expertise. I had a lawn chair and was sitting on his lawn making small talk with the neighbors and I got sunburned. Sunburn builds character.
If you have any wheel work you need done, I would recommend Jim for the job if you are in the area. He works off-hours as well and gets the job done in quickly and effectively.
He can be reached at (408) 981-4477 (cell).
To finish this post off, I just want to say that when I sport my "Dog is my co-pilot" t-shirt or when I go around with the bumper sticker I am no phony.

And thank you for the kind words about my Lab. He has a perch by the front window of my house and he barks to ward off strangers.
