6.35mm more inward and 6.35mm more towards the fender. (this equals 12.7mm, or 1/2", which accounts for the change from a 9"wheel to a 9.5" wheel)
With a 26mm offset, this would mean a 3.35mm inward extension and a 9.35mm outward extension. This more closely resembles the look of using a 10mm spacer with the stock wheel (which many are doing) as well as giving a few mm more suspension and brake clearance.
Looks like the change from 29 to 26 was evolutionary. As long as there is no rubbing with the 26, sounds like it is the better way to go.
