and there is a nice kick. Although it is not as strong as I expected it to be. I'm just used to power at any point of the rpm spectrum.

Maybe they'll allow a link? Or is the Gestapo hand so heavey these days?

http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/61278/e55_brabus_vi_012.jpg</a

I've owned an SL55, and I've driven the E55, so I'm well aware of the addictive throttle and I'll agree that the AMG's have more power and beefy torque, but that's it. There is no other comparison if you truly love to drive (versus just stomping on the gas pedal).
The car does need 10,000 miles to break in. The best thing about owning an RS4 from day 1 is watching, feeling and hearing it literally grow up. I kept the car stock until after 10,000 miles so I could experience its growth as planned by Audi. Then I added performance upgrades, such as GMG's exhaust. Even after 10,000 miles, the RS4 continues its transformation as a living beast.
The RS4 is as fulfilling a car as I've owned. Other RS4 enthusiasts can better state the reasons, but it has the "it" factor. If you judge an RS4 only by power in comparison to an E55, you're really missing out.

someone here did a few runs at a 1/4mi track vs. an E55, and was beating him consistently....can't remember who posted that, though.

just under 2000 rpms) to the track, it was incredibly frustrating to have full power when all I wanted was a gradually increasing tide of power from the apex on out. I could make it go as fast as anybody else, but with lots of axle tramp and what felt like abuse of the driveline. It's like having a choice of volume being either at 1 or 11 and nothing else;-) Note - this was a tight track. So the normally aspirated torque curve of the RS4 is better suited for charging through the twisties.
Of course if corners aren't your thing, then maybe a drag racerish car is a better choice for you. There is no one car suited for all people.

power the E55 is almost at redline. To me the RS4 is a much more involving drivers car, just about anybody could drive the E55 fast in a straight line, just point and stomp the gas. You could run 12's in the quarter while drinking a cup of coffee, just don't try to make it turn.

The M5's best run was 12.80 average was 13.30.
The E63's best run was 13.30 average was 13.40.
The RS4's best run was 13.20 average was 13.20.
The RS4 had 3/4 tank of 93 octane and it was 77 degrees out.
I personally talked to the M5 guy he said he was running less tire pressure, custom M Drive Tune, and 1/4 tank of 93 octane.

If you want to feel this car, as everyone else said, you keep the rpm's. It's like driving F1 car etc ... they are "low" torque, high reving engines, because physics tells you, that's how you propel a vehicle fastest. So, in order to feel the force of this car, you keep the rpm's up, if you felt this car was underpowered , I really suggest you take some driving classes to learn how to drive a car of this calibar, because it's a complete beast.
You'd say the same thing if you were in an F1 car and floored, you'd be like it's underpowered. It's not , it's just the way you need to drive it, high rpm at least 3K , and it feels like it's a space ship. In short, stay in the lower gears longer, and don't shift as much.

You've probably driven turboed cars which have lot's of low end torque, but because, of this they acdtually will have lower HP, you'll feel the torque but you actually aren't going faster than a car with High RPM engine, as it has greater HP, and is what controls speed. Too much torque is bad for High speed, because, basically it's not usable you redline far too fast.
Trust me, that RS4 is much faster, than most any car you've driven but true super cars. You think it's slower or "slower" than expected because it's Naturally Aspirated engine, trust what you feel, and how fast you are going, are in fact, to very different things.
