Default Thinking about upgrading my 05 S4 to an RS4.....

do you guys really think it is worth the extra dough?

Also I am looking at the new M5, and comparing it to the RS4 especially from the resale value point of view ( I keep my cars 3 years max.)

Any suggestions?

Default Is the M5 worth the extra dough?

RS4 is 17k more than a like equipped S4 and the M5 17k more than the RS4 (if you have a decent dealer who isn't scalping until the very end). M5 and RS4 are not really compariable cars.

Default do it!

the RS4 is definitely worth the upgrade especially if you look at how the 25Q S4 was overpriced. The M5 will definitely have better resale value than the RS4, not to mention have free scheduled service for 07 models during the entirety of how long you plan on keeping the car, so it is the better car to have if you plan on selling in 3 years. The E60 M5 is also the best car I've ever driven that is equally competent on the road and on the track. Having said that, if I could only have one car in my garage, it would still be the RS4.

Default New M5 drives great but, like other current 5ers, looks like a Saturn or a Kia

Much more so than the current A6/S6/RS 6 look like a Saturn or a Kia, that is for sure. It's too bad that the new M5's quality and reliability is horrific enough to make the quality and reliability of any Audi-old-and especially new-as bad as it is (though Audi's quality and reliability have improved significantly over the past few years)-seem like the quality and reliability of a Toyota or Lexus by comparison.

Default horrific quality and reliability? you speak from experience?

I think for a first year model, the E60 M5 has outstanding reliability... more so than any Audi I've owned. There was a recall on a VANOS oil line that was quickly remedied by replacing the hose (a bad batch from the rubber hose manufacturer) as well as a simple software update on the SMG3 that took care of some error messages on the iDrive but other than that, my M5 has been flawless in the 8k miles of ownership since last November despite the fact that I drive it very aggressively and have taken it to 5 track events now since track season started. Needless to say, I beat on it. That is more than I can say for my previous A4 and S4. My X5 4.8is also has been 100% flawless in 15k miles ownership up until its first scheduled service.

I do agree that the M5 is not the prettiest of cars, but it does look better than a Kia or Saturn
