In 6th gear at 80mph over 3K rpm
Hey guys,
I am pretty new to S4 and was wondering if it is normal for the engine to be at almost 3K rpm when in 6th gear going 80mph?
I had previous car(Nissan Maxima) with 6-speed and at 80mph it was around 2.5rpm or lower. That car had pretty big V6, 3.5L.
This V8 engine in S4 feels like it is strained and working very hard even with 6th gear.
Is that just how gearing is set on this car?

It is an "overdrive"
input shaft turns slower than the output

Re: 6th is just a normal gear...not like an overdrive.
Yeah, I mean it feels like you want to go into lower gear just for cruising down the highway. Feels like engine wants to go into gear and keep the RPMs down.
But I guess that is how it is designed.

Not to worry. It's made to actually cruise at 5-6K RPM all day long...
Ask me how I know. Because of the gearing and torq band, 6th gear acceleration is sick at speeds from 80 to 160 MPH. Just don't worry about fuel consumption and it will be fine. It's a German car...
