You need to do more turbo research...

Default Really? Maybe you should as well. Mechanical Engineer, 10 years in Champcar...

Your credentials?

The layout expressed in the picture, is very inefficient. The turbo should be mounted as close as possible to the exhaust manifold. Most designed have the turbo mounted between the exhaust manifold and downpipes. Not hung out in the exhaust...as shown in the picture.

And, the intake feed from the turbo needs to be as close as possible to the intake manifold.

The design presented is inefficient at best. Any HP/Torq gains would be negated by the amount of lag inherent with this poor design. I won't even get into the low hanging oil lines...

Default Well, you're right that it is not a typical nor an ideal location for a turbo, but...

there are a ton of rear mounted turbo installs out there and the cars make good power and, somehow, are not laggy. There are many vids on Youtube (search for STS turbo)... here's one, but check the website in the link also.

Default Ugh - I wont get into this but if you read anything about Remote mount turbos - the extra few feet

of tubing has little to no affect on lag times. Tell me- how fast does something travel in a vacuum? Once again - its all about appropriately sizing the turbo and because the intake charge is exposed to outside air, the charge is much cooler thereby providing denser air and more power than a FM turbo.

I completely disagree with you saying that any gains would be negated. That is senseless. I had an old 930 turbo that had a good deal of turbo lag, most likely more than any rear mount system, but in no way do I feel my car was "negated" by lag and when the boost hit holllld on.

I can think of 2 companies that have created a business on rear mount turbos. They were created about 7 years ago and are still in business. They are getting some serious gains.

I just hate people's negativity here about interesting ideas. And further more, its not like this design is new. This has been around for some time now and has been implemented on many many cars.

Default In the time it takes that system to spool the turbo and pressurize the intake, you may as well...

...have simply written a letter requesting more boost, mailed it to yourself on a Saturday, and then finally hit the throttle when you get the letter on Tuesday.

Default

If the design is so inefficient please explain to me why there are so many remote mounts then?

Default what kinda #'s dose this put out? TQ and HP gains? I wonder if ...

it is anything close to the level that would be worth the time to put in your S4's

Default I will believe you if you can tell me the difference in time it takes for extremely fast moving air

to reach a turbo mounted 1 foot away from its source to a turbo mounted 6 feet away from its source keeping in mind it is traveling a tube with extremely small volume.

Default Still waiting....credentials please.

The exhaust does not operate in a vacuum, and actually follows fluid and thermo dynamic laws, of which you are not aware of.

I have a B6 S4, and the location of the turbo, according to the picture, is much more than "a few feet". In fact, it appears to be over 9 ft. away, with the intake also 9 ft. away. Unless the design defies physical fluid and thermo dynamic laws, it remains an inefficient design. Actually this entire exercise is a pure waste of time.

Bone up on that degree, sport.
