Default Are 99% of sidewall bulges always caused by road hazard?

I just put on a brand spanking new set of Yokohomas (< 1 week ago) and now have a bulge in the driver side, tire's sidewall. Tirerack customer service said to really don't bother it should have been explained to me that bulges are "99%" caused by road hazard.

Is it just bad luck? I wouldn't know what to look for to determine what caused to bulge.

I would think largest % is caused by mfgr defect, and in your case with them being so new, even more so.

Sounds like TR's scheme to push the optional road hazard coverage.

Default Yeah I was expecting her sales pitch, but it never came.

I wanted to send the tire back, and have them check to see whether or not it is Yokohoma quality control or road hazard, but she lectured me instead on why not to bother sending it back.

Both types of damage couldn't look the same, could they?

Default They could, but at this point, they've made money off of you and would only lose if you sent it back

It may be in their policy that they won't take a return on such bubblage (word? it is now) so you may have to take it up with the manufacturer.

My experience has been 100% road hazard. One pothole is all it takes. When I leased my S4 and my GF's A4, I bought the wheel and tire protection for $395 for each car. I've already replaced two tires on each car inside of a year and get 100% reimbursed. If the roads suck in your area, get the road hazard warranty!

I've never had a tire bulge in sidewall due to a pothole, and I've hit my share...in many different cars over the years. I'm sure it can happen, although pot hole damage seems to be more confined to inside of tire under the tread area...and the occasional bent/cracked wheel.

I have had sidewall bulges due to mfgr defect a couple times, and that's how they were diagnosed.
