First of all this is a VERY COMMON issue with the trans in this car. I must have posted this recommendation AT LEAST a dozen times. But here it is AGAIN! This problem usually goes away between 2K and 5K mileson its own . If it doesn't, it is because of a synchro problem. Now for the fix. You can make the 1-2 shift much smoother by using either of these 2 techniques. 1) When shifting 1-2, hesitate about a nano sec in neutral between the gears.(This is good when driving liesurely). 2) (and better then #1 IMHO) When shifting 1-2, instead of pulling the gear shift lever straight down, apply pressure to the left side of the shift gate while shifting. IE, try to pull the shifter down and to the left(which will not happen) with left side pressure put on the shift lever. These stop gap methods should work until one day you will notice that they are no longer necessary due to the break in of the trans. If these proceedures don't work, and they usually do, there is a more serios problem going on.

The clearances are very tight and take some time to "wear" in. During the initail break in , damage can occur if not shifted in just the right way. Idiosyncratic clutch contributes to the condition.
