I have an //M roadster that has many of the same character - characteristics of the M3 and propose this observation.
I love the //M for trips < 200 miles and out in the country, not in town. The noise and a few rattles get to you after a while. However to take it out and punch it into a turn and grab a gear to accelerate ( mine does 0-60 in 4.5 - C&D stat.) Is a real grin , not a smile a real grin producer.
But to go over 200 miles in a day and I've done as much as 700 my the B5 S4, AND be able to relax and talk, listen to some tunes, watch the scenery and not get stuck or lose it on a curve in the winter or rain give me my S4.
As I comment in my sig - I have the best of both worlds, you have to choose which is most important to you . I guess I, personally would choose the S4 but would have some nostalgic sighs at times for the "M".
My two Cents.
