just in case for the drive down the mountain however the Contis did fine so I never used them - they are ISO approved for low fender clearance.

It depends on many factors:
Obviously, where you live. How much snow you get in a year. How many miles you have to drive your car in however much snow you get, wherever you happen to live, etc, etc, etc.
Are snow tires better in the snow? Of course. Is it a death sentence not having them? No. In fact, I'd bet that you're better off in an S4 with Quattro and summer tires than a rear wheel drive car with snow tires. Or even a front wheel drive car with snows.
Bottom line, if you get a lotta snow or plan to drive in much snow, get snows. If not, you're probably fine. <b>IMHO</b>
