and for some reason, even when I follow the rolling code programming procedure, it doesn't take.

Not that that means it has to work with every system, but just to let you know it is possible.
It did take a couple tries, and I did manage to wipe out my garage remote on the first try, but I got both working in the end. It seemed pretty much like the car had to learn the remote, then then door opener had to learn the car - if that makes sense.

The opener is a Liftmaster Professional Formula I with <a href="http://www.liftmaster.com/cw/safety/0,4027,uid-jmeCa2VkZ2tobQ==_654,00.html">"Security +"</a>
This was the process as I remember it.
Place the car in learning mode
Using garage remote - press button about a half foot in front of passenger headlight.
I think the lights flash or something to let you know it's done.
i.e. - teach the car your remotes code
Then get on a ladder, and push (but don't hold down) the 'big red button' on the gargage door opener. This puts the opener in learning mode.
Hop in the car and (or have someone else) push the homelink button that you just taught in the previous step.
The grage door opener lights will flash to let you know it's learned the code.
wah-la (or is that viola?) - you're done
Here's the bad part though, if you do something wrong while on the ladder (hold down the red button I believe) it resets the garage door opener and (I think) you have to re-program every remote tied to that opener. So in a condo with a shared opener...be careful, or your neighbors might find they can't open the garage door.

So, one day, you could come on here and say, "my rents' ***** is big and long, and I occasionally experiment with it, although it tastes funny somedays."
Is this crystal clear for you now?
