Anyone tried a higher 6th gear to help mileage? Any other ideas?

I get about 8mpg in the city (NYC) and consistently 22-24 on hw trips. Mixed driving = 18ish.
Unfortunately my car is a tip so that could make a difference..... :-( I have seen up to 27 on a winter trip with dry roads - 4.2's like cold air. :-p

and my 25 mpg + was mountain driving too not flat lands
