"the minimum HTHS viscosity of 2.9cP that the SAE requires for xW30 and xW40 oils has been judged insufficient by most German car manufacturers to prevent wear on the cams and bearings. For most vehicles, Audi requires a HTHS of 3.5cP as do BMW and Mercedes. [It goes on to say that Audi engineers are adamant that many oils that might seem appropriate by SAE grade, because of HTHS ARE NOT suitable for an Audi. It points out that the popular ILSAC fuel economy test was demanded by GM, Ford and Honda and to be passed requires oils of less than 3.5cP HTHS."
Mobil 1 5W40 T&SUV (Delvac 1) is HTHS 4.1.
My S4 will continue to get M1 T&SUV ...

You make the call as to whether engine longetivity or reducing their costs is more important to Audi, given they feel oil/filter changes every 10,000 miles with conventional, not synthetic oil is all they'll pay for.

Explains how the numbers can be decieving based on the compositions of the oils.

htt p://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=001528;p=1</a

Those cars. Even the 1.8Ts prior to MY2004 are now running with synthetic. Note that the mineral oil was a AOA thing to keep the cost of the included maintenance down.

they have a 8100 0W40 Ester based oil which meets all of the VW/Audi Specs for our car. They also make some nicer oils for the track. Some use Mobil1 but it has a lower flash point and is more suceptable to thermal break down. The infusion of the type of esters used in other oils is what causes this, where a true ester based oil is less likely to have these issues. Mobil1 is a great oil but you can do better for our cars.

But on my latest service they said they were mistaken, and that Audi will only pay for dino oil for anything other than cars with the 1.8T.
