Default Audi TT 225 owner here..thinking of jumping ship...

I have a 2001 Audi TT 225. Nicely modded...looking to trade up to a S4. Buddy of mine just got a 996 C2. Need more juice...
Any advice, I'm looking for a slightly used 04 S4 Dolphin Gray. What should I be aware of, I noticed some cars had Tranny/Throttle problems.
Thanks

Default Make sure it's a post-Nov build and you'll be fine.

Also, if it's pre-Nov, ask about service records and see if any work was done to the car. An early VIN with a brand new engine is just as good as a post-Nov build.

The tranny issues were bad detents. Some go, others don't. You can always check my TSB collection below and print it out and bring it to your sales guy and ask him to perform the preventative maintenance of replacing the detents (takes 1/2 day) in order to secure the deal, if the car falls within the VIN range on the TSB.

As far as the throttle issues, it's a DBW issue that doesn't seem to have any fix. Some hate it, other's don't notice it, and most just deal with it. There are ways around it, but it includes some software and hardware mods. ;-)

Default Correct. The throttle issue is not a "problem"...

...it's just an idiosyncrasy in the programming of it. Some find it more annoying than others; some don't notice it at all. But as far as I know, all S4's have the same programming, at least in the US.

Default I made the same move at Easter. TT -> S4

I had a 2001 225 TT Coupe with Milltek and APR chip, RS6 wheels, H&R springs, Koni shocks, etc

I bought the S4 (AMD stage 3) with 5k miles on it and 6 months old from a friend. It didn't cost me much more than a new loaded 3.2 TT.

The seats are a huge improvement and the smoothness of the V8 is at the opposite end of the scale to the TT. Power is instant with my turbo wind up.

The only thing I would say is that it doesn't feel fast. It is but it disguises it and without the turbo surge you just don't notice the way the speed keeps climbing.

The throttle issues have largely been overcome by my remap and my tranny failed (lost reverse)and was sorted out before I got it.

I was getting about 24mpg from the TT and now we get about 18mpg.

I'm so glad I made the move. The noise is immense and you feel like you're driving a real piece of quality motor.

Get out there and get test driving! ;-)

Default If you're used to a TT, make sure you test drive an S4 first...

While the HP increase is very nice and the S4 handles very well for a car of its size and weight, the latter two items are key, and you may feel the S4 feels too "sedany" in the twisties as compared to your TT...

Default Well, in any AWD, if you yank the steering wheel under full throttle it's going to push at some ...

point, but it's amazing how neutral the car is when driven properly.

Default My 6 speed is very notchy...

Some issues with grinding 2nd and sometimes 3rd. You can't slam the gears like in some cars...(Focus SVT)...

Did you swap the anti-roll bar?
