I have been trying to figure out the cause of a humming/droning noise that I believe began shortly after I installed a set of Bilstein PSS9 Coilovers. The noise is a droning/humming sound that peaks at about 40 mph. Sounds a bit like road noise, but higher pitch and perhaps its just my imagination, but you can almost feel it. The sound is most noticeable on smooth roads (probably due to the lack of other road noise). The intensity of the sound also changes with different tires (but is always there to some degree). After many trips to the dealer I managed to have them look at everything they could think of including removing and inspecting all 4 wheel bearings. They can't figure out the issue and have basically come to the point where they can't do anything else unless I revert the suspension back to stock (which I would much like to avoid). Has anyone heard of or experienced a similar issue?? It is driving me completely insane.

Common problem. Most likely not the cause of your issue, but I would advise that EVERY, B6/B7 owner check their level REGULARLY.

road noise that changes with the type of road is tire wear issue. Had it on a set that I just got rid of last spring. Everyone thought it was wheel bearings but I knew better.
Could be you had an alignment issue that got resolved when you put the coilovers on but the wear on the tires is now uneven.
Or your new alignment is bad.

It was initially suspected to be the tires, but tires have been ruled out. The same noise exists on brand new tires. Several combinations of tires have been tried. The noise does seem more pronounced with harder, smoother summer tires.
Could the noise be produced by an alignment issue even on new tires with no wear? Even at very low speeds?

Actually, I have. I had that issue in the past. The sound I'm having now is different. Thanks though. I agree that everyone should know about that.
