Default Is this a bad idea...

I might be picking up an S4 from a dealer 800 miles away. It just so happens I will be in the same area riding with another couple to wedding that same weekend.

So I'm considering saving the money of shipping the car and just driving it home from the dealer.

Do you guys think this is a bad idea to break the car in this way, an 800 miles trip home before the car is broken in properly.

I was planning on doing 60 mph the enitre way and making frequent stops (every 2 hours or so) on the way home if I was to do this.

What you guys think?

thanks. Joe

Default Just do not drive for more than .................

1 hour at the same speed. You must vary the engine speed and I would not suggest taking the car to red line. Otherwise this is a great way to break-in your engine. Have fun!

Default what you need to do is....

drive the car in every gear in the 2000-4500/5000 band and never just stay in one gear for an extended ammount of time. Varrying the RPM's is very important to proper break in. Its the major thing both schools of thought to break in with agree on. Where would you be picking the car up from?

Default I'd be picking it up in NJ, from Chicago.

yeah... I will do that for sure.

Shift through the gears a lot and not stay at a certain speed for more than an hour or so.

Can't wait... 2 weeks!

thanks for the suggestions.

Default You need to change gears every 10-20 minutes

Driving at the same RPM for an hr at a time will be detrimental to engine break in. By changing gears you will vary the rpms. Also brief spurts os acelleration, followed by decelleration are recommended. I.E. If you have a 6 sp., On the highway, run in 5th gear, then 6th,back to 5th,4th on ocassion. Ocassional jaunts to 85 mph in ether gear, follwed by decelleration to normal cruising speed. ONE HR AT SAME RPM IS BAD FOR YOUR NEW ENGINE! Same process will work for tip.

Default speed really doesnt matter just gears/rpms....

you can go 120 and be in 6th pushing 6th into its mid band. its all about working the gears and the rpms within those gears.

Default while I normally trust a good tech....

if audi says keep it below 5k, im gonna keep it below 5k. Granted I dont think any one of us didnt push the car on occasion during break in. Its hard not to see what this beast can do.
