which I think is what he was getting at.
I wish the coolant temp gauge was more accurate instead of just moving up to top dead center after a brief time. Mine can hit full warm on the gauge within about 5 minutes driving time, unless very cold outside. I know the engine isn't fully warm at that point...I can feel it.

That's 1/2 correct Dave. What I'm referring to is that although the coolant may be at the "warmed-up" temp, the motor oil is most definitely not. It takes about 15 min of normal driving to bring the engine oil up to temp. Romping on your sh*t with cold motor oil (read: too viscous for optimum flow and hence, lubrication) is just as bad as doing the same with cold coolant.

While letting a car idle after a cold start to warm up may be a waste of gas, I still don't just drive right off. Maybe 15-30 seconds depending on how cold the temp outside is. Then, as you say, take it easy(<3000rpm) until the engine is fully warm.
