Burning oil
#13
Broken in by the book. No burn detectable between changes. Numerous synthetic oil...
changes since 2k. Suggest you go to the dealer and have it filled and log a concern. Then track it say every 500 miles or so. Go back to the dealer if it continues to go low. Of course cars burn oil but not much anymore. I agree, could be low not burn too.
I would also suggest you go to an engine builders shop and ask them yourself how an engine should be broken in. Ask racing engine(disposable) vs replacement road car engine (would be nice if it lasts type.) Our opinions may not be what you want to base a significant question on.
The owners manual is screwed up on oil so who's to say it isn't on the breakin. Having said that, my opinion: The book breakin is consistant with most peoples opinions of how to work in an engine. I'm not big on beating on a 50k car to find out if something completely contrary to the manufacturers advice is going to work.

Yes, it is normal. I just did my 5000M oil change and the tech guy said
It is normal. And lots of us get the same thing.
I actually add another Q before do my 5000M change. So, stock the oil for URGENT use.

Being down a qt. of oil, especially during the 1st 5K mi. or so is fine...
I broke my engine in w/ a good compromise between "driving it like you stole it" and the manuals recommendation of "easy": varying rpm, 2nd/3rd/4th gear to 5k w/ engine decel during 1st 600mi. Redline after that a bunch of times till 1K and then drive normal. Burning oil during this time is variable but normal. The rings have not set fully during the first 1K mi. (though some say they set in the first hundred, but that are bike engines w/ diff alloys, etc.)So, obviously some oil will "blow-by" initially till the rings REALLY seat. I have 3000mi and I went through 2.5 qts. of oil in the 1st 2K mi. and 1000 enthusiastic miles later I have not burned 1 drop. People claim the car gets faster after 5K mi., so, going w/ that claim one can argue the engine is still settling up to and around 5K mi. The reason an engine would get stronger is the fact that there is a great seal in the combustion chamber:rings. If this is happening there wil be some normal oil consumption. Some people will argue that german engines, w/ nikasil cylinders, take up to 20-30 thousand miles to FULLY break-in.

No no, there isn't a proper time window to get piston rings to seat...
that's nonsense.
How hard you break the engine in will determine how quickly the running surfaces and sideflanks of the rings will bed themselves in. However, it will reach the same level of wear regardless...it just takes longer.
I've seen rings with 300k miles which weren't fully bedded on the sidefaces.
