Default Can you do this with your throttle?

Hey Everyone,

I've been experimenting more with my throttle. I'll be bringing it to the dealer Monday, but since I already know they won't have another car there for me to compare to, I'm hoping some of you can confirm something for me.

In neutral (stopped), what is the fastest you can get your engine to 2k rpms, without overshooting?

What I'm finding is that there is no throttle position that does that on my car. There's a threshhold at around 1/2" down. Less than that, the revs will creep up to 2k, taking almost 2 seconds. Beyond that, they sing up to 3.5k+ faster than I can back off.

This totally rules out my lack of familiarity with the clutch. If I can't target the revs acurately, then of course I won't be able to start smoothly. My only option would be to "catch" the revs with the clutch at a non-abusive level while they're on their way up to clutch-melting speeds.

How is it for you guys?

Default Oh totally! It's completely variable too. Sometimes I surprised because when the clutch is engaged

it seems to rev higher than when it's not. I'll test it like you describe tomorrow though!

Default Another observation

Once with clutch in, I blipped the throttle pretty pretty good (quick punch to the floor)expecting revs to 3K and it kept on going to about 6k. This was pretty alarming, having the engine rev without you foot on the gas, but I haven't been able to repeat it since so haven't bothered getting it looked into further. Maybe there was something to that 80's unintended acceleration thing after all? ;-)

Default I am really starting to wonder

If it's not simply deliberate programming of the throttle - Audi engineers thinking either they know better, or perhaps trying to compensate for some other problem by influencing control over throttle change.

Like maybe they don't want sudden transistions to & from WOT b/c coming from a 4L V8, that can be really hard on, well, everything.

Default I've noticed slight hesitation in the throttle when the engine is cold.

I will go test again now, cold and warm. I will comment later.

Default Just use your EARS

Watching the tach and screwing around with getting the EXACT rev is a waste. You should be able to make a smooth start at just about any rpm - you may fry the clutch, but you can still make it smooth.

Default Ok, so I see what you're saying about overshooting

when trying to get to 2k as quickly as possible, but it only happens when it's cold.

However, once you rev past 3k warm or cold, it hovers in the 3000s for a second and a half before it drops rapidly down. Is this normal?

Default the whole point is to *not* fry the clutch

Also, I never said I was trying to get to an exact RPM at all, in fact I said the opposite - I can't land it between 2000 and 3000 at all. It either takes like 3 seconds to slowly creep to 2k, or it blasts way past 3k in <1/2 sec. There is no throttle position that creates a happy medium between those two extremes.
