Day 4 with my car and I'm getting 10mpg...

Sure, hit me up w/the link....
...and you should come to the ACNA event in early December as well. Randy Pobst was there flogging everybody's car in April - dunno if that will happen again, but it was a nice, low key group. Some ridiculous cars - including a couple of insane NASCAR-type stock cars - but not nearly enough B6 S4s.

Honest question....
I saw a feature on the new C6 vette that says its 6.0 liter pushrod V8 gets 17/25. Granted, those are only EPA estimates, but how can an engine that uses an older design and generates 60 more hp and 100 more ft/lbs of torque get so much better mileage than the 4.2? Is it because B6s are so piggy? Quattro?

Re: Day 4 with my car and I'm getting 10mpg...
I have 17k miles on my car, I get 10mpg. I bought a second car, my feet will not get lighter.

What's the real difference between manual and tip re: mileage? We just pulled 23.6...
We just got back from a week long trip down the oregon coast. The car did great. Super comfortable and capable road trip car.
We blew back up from cannon beach tonight, and averaged 23.6 for the trip, including some in town driving. I think our average for the entire week was about 22.
What are people seeing w/their manual trannies? The tip does shift up very quickly in casual driving, which is fine by me since it kicks down one or two or three gears very quickly when asked. Oh, passing cars on a two lane road is a blast in this thing -- it pulls 60-100 very quickly

Manuals have a much higher gearing. Same reason we (MT6) pay GG.
I've seen 20-22 MPG on the interstate travelling at high speed. Around town, I'm around 13-14 MPG, depending on how I drive. I have seen 16-17 MPG in the city as well. But that was one week of straight shot city driving.

When/how are you shifting?!?!
Try upshifting at no more than 3000 RPM or so and skip shift, at a minimum 1->3 if not 1->4. Try to "shift like a Tiptronic in D mode" and get it into as high as a gear as possible as soon as possible; for example the S4 can comfortably cruise down a 35-40 MPH street in fifth or sixth gear. A 1->3->6 shift completed by as you get to 40 MPH shouldn't be out of the question.
If you say "but that's not why I bought an S4, I want to hear the engine" you're going to pay for it at the gas pump.
BTW, that's the way the Corvettes get their good mileage, from the gate in the transmission that forces a 1->4 skip shift unless you're driving the car in a performance-oriented way...

1-4 upshift
MT Vettes have a mechanism added to their trannies that forces 1-4 upshift instead of 1-2-3-4 under anything but WOT runs. It gets the EPA mileage above GG limit, and is relatively easily disabled by the owner. I wish Audi would be clever enough to do something like this with S4.

Are you kidding?!?!?!
That feature is HATED and actually makes things worse in the real world. People will gas the car in order to skip this feature. Talk about applying a bandaid to a gunshot wound...
Anyway, the insanely tall gears are what give the Corvette such good cruising economy. At highway speeds, the engine is barely spinning 1400 RPM...compared to the 2000+ of the S4. This is dumb for a performance car IMO because it makes 6th useless (can't pull top speed) so you essentially have a 5 speed.
