Dealer charged me for synthetic at 5K service. Is this normal?

Yeah, I brought in my own Mobil 1, otherwise they would've charged me $9/qt. they said.... however..
I remember at least one person who said his dealer gave him synthetic at no extra charge in Cincinatti, OH I believe.

Suggest you do a search for this one. Debated topic.
All I can tell you is the ONLY Mobil 1 weight that carries the Audi/VW cert that you want is 0W-40.
Look on the back of the bottles, you will see the 0W-30, 5W-30, etc.... do NOT carry the VW/Audi approval.
You can use the oil you want, but I buy the weight that carries the approval.

er, dunno. I guess if it's different than what they'd fill with otherwise
I gave up arguing this for my B5 and just brought my own.
Even tho the B5 owner's manual specifically states 0w-30, the dealer will fill with whatever crap they have on hand.

The Audi/VW cert is just marketing; all you need is oil of the weight/grade specified in the manual
A "certification" by an auto maker is simply a marketing tool.
The owner's manual specifies the weight and grade of the oil to be used and any oil meeting those specs can be used quite safely.

OK, then why does M1 0W-30 not carry the specs and 0W-40 does???
Marketing? What does that have to do with marketing???
If it had to do with marketing all M1's would be approved.
Maybe because the other weights don't stand up to the longevity tests for the 503.01 or 505.00
