Check engine light came on yesterday and stayed on. I let the car get pretty empty on fuel before filling and I heard it misfiring as i pulled into the gas station...(only took 15.5 gallons). Called the dealership and asked them for some help troubleshooting and they asked what octane gas I use. I told them...91 of course and they recommended using 87 or 89. Has anyone else ever heard this? They told me at higher altitude, you don't need such high octane and maybe that's why the car misfired. Needless to say, i'm going to the dealer today to get the code cleared and the car checked out. Imagine all the money I could have saved on gas if I would have known that i could have used el-cheapo.

Now, I don't know about using 87 or 89, but when I traveled to Colorado from lower elevation Florida where I only use 93 octane. Colorado didn't even have 93 octane so I just used 91 octane.

strange that an audi dealer would say that. using 87 will result in reduced performance and potential carbon buildup in upper cylinders. i would stick with what Audi says, and not the dealer.

to suggest that a higher octane would CAUSE detonation is a bit silly. Your car may not be able to use the extra octane, but it doesn't mind it at all. You using 93 octane at your altitude is the equivalent of me using 98 octane at sea level.

I've seen this type of post over and over. The dealer usually says that 93 octane creates excessive deposits and 87 octane will reduce those deposits. Since this comes up so often across so many dealers I have to wonder where this is coming from.
I wouldn't do it unless I saw something definitive from Audi. I'd run a few tanks with Techron or BG-44. This will at least help clear up any deposits.

http://www.chevron.com/products/prodserv/fuels/bulletin/motorgas/6_deposit-control/</a
