No way...an SC does make an S4 an RS4 competitor nor a wannabe.

I was having the same "dilemma". My dealer (Audi/Lambo/Ferrari/Lotus) made it easy for me. I bought an S4 Avant & fully loaded A6 4.2 S-Line at the same time in August, full MSRP at that. Went in for 5K service and told them we wanted to trade in for a Q7 and an RS4. "Sure!", he told me. He won't take anything less than $15K over the MSRP for an RS4 but would give me a break on the Q7 at only $5K over. After trying to get it down and then a few other words we never even got to how bad they would try to stick it me for the trade ins. He tells me most of other customers don't have a problem with their prices and in fact most are repeat clients.
Long story/rant short... Looks like S/C for me.

I just had the wonderful luck to take a euro-spec RS4 for a 20 minute test drive about 3 weeks ago while over in Europe. I had one on order with my local dealership but ended up cancelling it after the test drive, and put my name down for a S6 instead.
The reason is the RS4 is a wonderfully fast car on long open stretches of road but actually feels quite a bit slower than my 2005.5 S4 in around town "stoplight" races. The RS4 has to be really worked to take advantage of it's power as it's all way up the RPM band. On paper I know the power curve looks great but it's another matter to actually be able to make use of it. With my S4 I can put my foot into it and get immediate seat-of-the-pants goodness, where with the RS4 I had to work to get that same thrill, and if really worked it would thrill more.
So my choice went the the S6 with the V10, should be plenty fast and still have more down low torque which the RS4 was lacking.
Now, the RS4 has a lot of other features that make it an amazing car - but I feel it is a car made to be driven and feel North America doesn't offer the oppurtunity to really let the genie out of the bottle.
My opinion only.
