Default DIY Oil Changes

I need to change the oil in my S4. A friend suggested getting an oil dipstick pump to evacuate the oil myself without having to drain from the bottom, rather than hittting the local Meinecke. Does anyone use this method? I have heard that Mercedes trains their technicians to do oil changes this way. Allegedly, the particulates would be suspended in the oil after it is warmed up and therefore this is a decent way to change the oil. I am skeptical. Also, where are the best places to recycle the used oil? Thanks for any info.

Do it the old-fashioned way. Buy some jack-stands. I don't like idea of pulling oil from the top.

Default Agree - or low clearance Rhino Ramps...$28 @ Walmart...just be

careful...the oil drains from our motors at a rate that I've never seen before. It comes out fast! The drain plug/hole are huge.

Default i don't want to have to deal with the mess 10 qt of oil can make

You're right, it does come out amazingly fast.

I've been doing my 'off-interval' 5k oil changes via the dipstick with a Tempo oil boy pump. Given that our oil filter is up top and easy to change, it seems like a no brainer.

Default I've heard from people that have used a extractor long term that there was no issues with using it

I bought one and plan to use it.

Default I've been using an oil extraction system for over five years. No issues at all.

Warm up the engine a bit, and you can extract just about as much as you could by draining. I actually tested both back in 2001, and both methods removed about the same amount of oil. I think the extractor left a tablesoon of more oil, if that.

With ten qts. of new oil going in will take care of any residual oil.

Many service stations have oil recycling, as do many oil change places. I've known of a few car parts places that offer oil recycling.
