Default DrGP too late for Motoman break in? Day 4 - 260 miles

If I start doing WOTs to redline now, will that help? It says the rings can sit within the first 20 miles. The car had more than that when I got it. Unfortunately I just read the Motoman break in theory, along with the oil consumption threads. I am afraid I am too late...

Default You may be able to re-bed them...

I wouldn't give up on it just yet...try motoman break in, at this point, either it is beneficial to the longevity, or the car remains the same (if the seals are already broken in).

Glad to see you have put some miles on the car!

Default Look...

Neither babying it not "living life 1/4 mile at a time" are the trick. Just drive it and be sure to use "some" big throttle / big rpm at some point after warm-up on every drive you take and everything should be fine.

Our 08 has 3500 miles and appears to not have used a drop of oil.

You're going to be all right. Don't sweat it.

Default Not to late. Because the cylinder walls are acid etched ALUSIL

they take longer to break in than a conventional cross hatched cast iron cylinder walls.

Default One of the most important aspects is the engine braking after the acelleration

Engine braking is what facilitates engine break in.

Default How far down do I go with engine breaking? For instance...

I will go to red line in third gear, then let off the throttle. Let the car go down to 3K RPM? Is that about right?

Oh yeah, does Wide Open Throttle mean full blast?

On a side note, it's kind of hard to find a place in West LA to do this. The car gets fast at red line

Default you can do it in 2nd gear, 3rd gear, and so on....

but you want to progressively load the engine. Start at 1/2 WOT, then 3/4 WOT then WOT...run it to before redline and back down to 3000RPM or so.

Default Answers

1)let the car "engine brake" back to normal cruising speed.

2)Wide Open Throttle (pedal to the floor)

3) In a confined area you can do it in first or second gear. DO NOT DO IT from a standing start as in a drag race. But from 5-10mph is fine.

Default Thanks! I'll make sure the car is warmed up...

I noticed a burning smell after I tried it once today. Is that normal? I got that smell when I test drove the car. My cousin said that was normal for the first 100 miles or so. I guess since I've never taking the engine up that high, it's just a result.
