Had all 8 coil packs replaced recently and was about to bring the car to the local dealer to diagnose occasional misfiring. Car lost power yesterday on the way to the dealer and had to be towed. The dealer's diagnosis is one of the valves in cylinder # 1 became "carbonized", which caused it to "drop" and smash into the piston. As you might guess, this resulted in alot of damage to the valve, piston and probably other parts.
Has anyone here had similar experience? Wondering if a faulty coil pack could be responsible for excessive carbon build up on the valve and if not, what might be the cause of this?
Appreciate the help!

Yes and all too common. I had heard of cylinder #5 usually being the one that fails. Hope you have a warranty or the car is CPO'd. If not, your looking at some serious money to fix this. Best of luck.

My concern is this: If Audi knows the coil packs on these cars fail and cause misfire... is it possible that my "catastrophic failure" was caused by the coil pack not firing? Still don't understand how a misfire can result in the intake valve interfering with the piston. Any engineers want to enlighten me?

Quick update from both AoA and my dealer: The engine is toast - damage to not only the piston and valve, but head and cylinder wall were also damaged. They tested the coil associated with the damaged cylinder and state that it's firing normally.
What else could cause this sort of damage? Car was never tracked or overrevved. Always used mobil 1 every 5k miles and used high-quality (mobil, shell, exxon) 93 octane. Any thoughts are appreciated.

[QUOTE=prs4;23971323]How many miles on your S4? 97k
What year and vin number? 2004 (vin ends in 142308)
Is it an early 2004 car? I believe this VIN does make it an "early '04"
This will help make things easier in your search for a reason!How so?
If you have any compelling info, I'd welcome a call (617.697.9002)
