The speed wire is the GALA or V wire and is not required in a B6. This makes it much easier if you have the right plug and play adapter. I would always try to get the "right" adapter harness from one of the sources in Germany. If such an adapter comes with the unit, chances are good that it won't fit or is missing wires.
Most units on ebay.de are used but once in a while you find a new one. Anyhow, if the faceplate is OK and you have the radio code, it doesn't really matter because after updating the software they are virtually identical.
Once you got the original DVD from Navteq or Audi I'm sure there will be someone who can help you getting it to work in the EU unit. Since you have to get the DVD for both the US and the EU unit, this should probably be the first step, followed by getting the adapter harness.
Can't coment on the phatbox question since I don't have one. But I have read messages where people confirm that the phatbox works. Since the CD changer control hasn't changed, there is no reason why it shouldn't work with either the US or EU unit.

I had the same concerns too when I looked at all the info on NAVPLUS site. But thanks to AudiA4B6 and others from the site, I figured since they did it already, on their B6, it wouldn't be as difficult to install as the AllRoad.
It is VERY plug 'n play in a B6 (I have an '05 B6 with Symphony II BOSE).
I would say it take the average person about an hour tops to complete the install.
Swapping the headunit is the easiest part (the adapters plug right in) and swapping the diversity antenna connector took a whopping 2 minutes. No messing around w/small wires or any wiring skills are needed at all...
Re-VAGCOM'ing is the second easiest part... just make sure you code it correctly (and be patient... my DIS didn't display route info until the unit was shutdown and then restarted later).
The part that took the longest was installing the GPS antenna. I "kinda" removed the DIS cluster (I couldn't figure out how to pop off the harnesses... so I just reached my hand behind it after I pulled it out far enough and put the antenna in a cubbyhole up to the top/right behind the cluster. I originally put it towards the left side of the cluster... but got 5 satellites. I moved it as far right as possible in the cubbyhole and now getting 7-8 satellites... perfect!
As for EU/US units.. EU units are cheaper than US... but the CD changer will work in both AS LONG as you have the right adapters. SAT will work w/the US unit (just need the B7 Sat receiver). AM stations will pick up better with the US unit, and no modified DVDs are needed for the US unit. Those are the major differences.
