E90 M3 getting an I-6...is the RS4 going to dominate?
I was just browsing through the M3 board and apparently there is some news going around that the E90 M3 is getting an I-6 and not the V-8 everybody is expecting. They may just put the M3 on a big diet instead, who knows. With all the news of the RS4 coming out, sounds like that it could eat up the M3 when it comes out in a year or two. Here is the quote:
'Helmut Himmel, the BMW M5 Project Manager has clearly stated that there will be NO cut down version of the V10 engine for the E90 M3 and no V8. This means that the BMW M3 is stuck with the inline 6. Himmel's statement (crushing the long held belief that the next M3 would be a V8) was made in response to a question about using a cut down version of the M5's stunning 373Kw V10.'<ul><li><a href="http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=47751">http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=47751</a</li></ul>

That's great!
Haha. Great for me I suppose, only because of the damned ugliness and unexpected early release of the b7. (a main reason why I bought the s4 over the m3 was the fact that the body was changing on the 3 series...little did poor Sia know...)
If they stay with the inline 6, I can't see power being bumped up to anything higher than 350hp. That's Porsche territory...I just don't see it!
Makes me a lot happier about my purchase now if this is true.
Thanks for reading. Have a nice day. ;-)

just because there's no cut down v10 does not mean there will not be a v8, though ...
personally i couldn't care less what the cylinder configuration is, as long as the power-to-weight ratio is good. horsepower wars are lame, to be frank.

I don't see how they can afford not to put in V8.
There is no way they can squeeze out any more power out of the I6. And to keep up with the Joneses you need 400+ hp for next gen performance sedan.
