Agreed.....(longish)
Atleast with weight loss wars you gain on many fronts. Handling 1, Braking, Accel. You add more hp generally you add more weight with a bigger engine, turbos, superchargers etc. Which degrades braking and handling. Technically they dont need to do anything just keep things the way they are and find ways to cut weight. Ruf rips out 300 pounds of heft from a 911 build. Granted they're a coach builder but they just use lighter materials. Before the Supra turned into fast and furious it was serious sports car. (it still is but its haunted by that image)Not so much for hp but for its emphasis on weight reduction. Hollowed out carpet fibers so they could save 10 pounds on the carpet alone. The Elise took it to the extreme but i think they dropped the ball with their engine choice.

This will turn out to be false....
The M3 will almost certainly have a V8 that will likley put out 400+HP. BMW is known for keeping things a bit hush hush. It would be a big mistake on BMW's part to stick with the I6. Don't get me wrong.... one very good engine, but the power plateaus and the only thing left to do is add more cylinders or turbo/supercharge which I highly doubt that BMW will go that route.

agreed, but that would be marketing to smart people...
Horsepower is a huge marketing tool for the general population. Manufacturers throw out high HP numbers to sell cars and more often than not it works very well regardless of all of the other more important aspects of the car that you mentioned. M-B is extremely guilty of this. That being said ... there should be a good mix of performance and amenities. I would never consider a WRX or an Evo. Thats going too far the other direction IMO.

I hope they come out with the rumored 330Ti
The step between the 330i and the M3... Supposed to be a 3.0L 340hp Turbocharged I6. Can you imagine that with a little software or a turbo upgrade?? =)

Re: I don't see how they can afford not to put in V8.
BMW built very reliable big sixes over 13 years ago.
90-92 M5 3.6 311hp
93+ M5 3.8 340hp, 295 ft. lbs
Lighter block, components, tech. advances, etc. could easily get you 60hp without much strain on the engine.
What I do like about a small V8 is it is short and a pretty light engine with today's material. Plus a shorter crankshaft if they want to spin it.

http://bimmer.roadfly.org/bmw/forums/e34m5/5911749-1.html</a
